Balm of Gilead (Black Salve)

This traditional herbal formula is not a pharmaceutical preparation, has not been evaluated by the FDA or endorsed by the medical profession. The formula is made from Zinc chloride, bloodroot, galangal root, and distilled water. This herbal preparation has been used by people and animals for traditional health support. The reason it is sometimes called “Black Formula” or “Salve” is because the herbs start out reddish in color but turn black during processing. 

Note: No medical claims are made about this herbal preparation. This instructional document has been prepared as a narration of what users have reported to be the most effective ways to use the preparation as a traditional folk remedy.

This is not intended as a report of scientific studies, and it is not offered as endorsed by the AMA or the FDA. It is intended to be an honest private report of what is known for those who are interested. What is reported here is the result of informal trial and error on the part of many non-professional folks intent to support naturally healing themselves or their animals. What follows is experience but is by no means complete.

Historical Background: There are various stories of the ‘discovery’ of “Black Formula”.  This is one of them. An early pioneer family was introduced to the “Black Formula” by Native Americans. The formula was passed down in that family for 3 generations. For many years Indian herbals have been used to support regulation of dysregulated cells, not only in humans but also in animals as well as to support normal, healthy response to dysregulated cells. This is the original formula given to the family. Three generations of the McCrorey Family used the preparation to support positive response to various dysregulation situations.

Balm of Gilead has been used successfully by tribal people for many generations and is now being used by knowledgeable people of today as a dietary supplement. It is also used, off-label, on the skin We write about this unauthorized use as we want people to be safe, even when not using the product as directed.  When dietary supplements are used as directed they are deemed safe.
